“Rockin' The World!” An Introduction To Geology
The Earth is alive, and constantly moving and changing. Even at this moment, upheavals inside the Earth are occurring; Volcanoes and earthquakes are happening, mountains are being created, rivers carrying sand and mud are depositing this sediment on land, and all the time large chunks of the Earth's surface are moving—about as fast as your hair grows. All this Earth action is linked by the rock cycle.
Using exciting and fun hands-on activities, participants will learn about volcanoes and earthquakes, and how they relate to plate tectonics. Find out how different parts of the rock cycle work by coming to this dynamic workshop that introduces rocks and minerals. Experiment with hands-on activities designed to introduce participants to geology. Learn how to identify and classify rocks using the MOH hardness scale, color, texture, buoyancy, and cleavage. Examine the properties of minerals and discover the importance of rocks, minerals and metals in our lives.
Materials are provided, and each participant will be able to take home a gem or mineral. This workshop will:
- Explain how igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are formed.
- Relate plate tectonics and the movement of heat and materials within the earth to major geological events, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain building.
- Introduce the Earth's layers and how they change the Earth.
“Rockin' The World!” is a one and a half hour workshop and it can be modified to match the needs of your organization. Tricia Rush will be happy to do that as long as you book the program early enough in advance.
